STOP THE PLAN TO REPOWER CAYUGA OPERATING PLANT
The NYS Public Service Commission is considering the unthinkable - approving a gas burning power plant in the middle of the Marcellus Shale region of upstate NY, along the shores of Cayuga Lake.
At the PSC's request, the old, money-losing, coal-burning Cayuga Operating Plant has submitted a $500 million proposal to "repower" the plant by converting it to burn "natural" gas. Residents and businesses in Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins and Yates Counties will pay for this conversion through their utility bills. NYSEG and National Grid, the regional electric suppliers, say the expensive conversion is not needed - that instead, for less than $100 million, they can upgrade the transmission lines to provide the service reliability the region needs and the plant can be shut down. The Sierra Club, Earthjustice, and the Business Council of New York agree with NYSEG's proposal to upgrade the grid and close down the plant. RAISE YOUR VOICE! The Public Service Commission is accepting public comments on the choice to repower or shutdown and upgrade the grid until August 16th. We've made it easy for you to make your voice heard by providing background information on a different topic each day and a webform for you to submit your comments. We'll print them out and deliver them to the Public Service Commission and Governor Cuomo. |
