No Redactions!
Cayuga Operating Company's public proposal for converting the power plant to burn methane gas instead of coal has more redacted pages than readable ones. Over 120 pages of their 191 page proposal are black - withheld from public view. The NYSEG proposal to upgrade the transmission lines isn't much better (though it is shorter.)
The Public Service Commission has allowed both these companies to keep hidden from public view essential environmental and economic information. How much will these projects cost? How long will they take to complete? Where will the gas pipeline be sited? And most important - How much will we, the rate-paying customers of NYSEG and National Grid be forced to pay? The PSC has a legal obligation to make financial and environmental information available to the public. Decisions like this are too important and impose too high a burden on the ratepayers to be made behind closed doors and with purposeful exclusion of full public disclosure. LETS HAVE FUN WITH THIS ONE! Use the webform at the right to send a "redacted" message to the PSC to let them know you want transparency. Just write the word "REDACTED" in the "Your Comments" section and we'll send the PSC a stack of blacked out pages with a sentence at the bottom that says: For all the foregoing reasons, I ask the PSC to publish unredacted versions of the Cayuga Operating Plant and NYSEG proposals so that as a ratepayer I can see all the environmental and economic information I need to make a fully informed decision. Further, please extend the comment period so I can review and respond to the new information that is provided. See recent media coverage about the redaction problem.
